make an erupting volcano

Make an erupting volcano

If you haven’t done it yet, building a working volcano that erupts is great messy fun. If you want to see it erupt a few times, make some extra "lava mixture" on hand.

For the volcano, you will need:

a grown up to supervise

scissors

tin foil

plastic cup

baking tray or container

Plasticine or playdough

newspapers

For the lava, you will need:

3 - 4 tbs baking soda

few drops of dishwashing detergent

1/2 cup of water

red food colouring

1/2 cup white vinegar

1. Place a paper cup on your tray and wrap tin foil around it, folding the tin foil over the rim of the cup and shaping the remainder tin foil to resemble a mountain. Set the tray on newspapers to protect surfaces.

2.Roll out plasticine or playdough with a rolling pin and place over tin foil and over rim of cup as shown. You may need to use a few sections of rolled out playdough for easier shaping.

3. After your volcano is built, put the baking soda, dishwashing detergent and water into the volcano plastic cup.

4. Mix the food colouring with the vinegar in a separate cup.

5. Slowly pour the vinegar into the volcano and watch the eruption!

How it works: Notice the red ‘lava’ that flows out of your volcano. This happens because of the baking soda and vinegar mixture. Mixing baking soda and vinegar produces a chemical reaction in which carbon dioxide gas is created - the same gas that bubbles in a real volcano. The gas bubbles build in the bottle, forcing the liquid ‘lava’ mixture of the bottle and down the sides of your volcano.

Did you know?

People have been playing marbles and marble-like games for thousands of years.  It is thought that marbles started with the cavepeople playing with small pebbles or balls of natural clay.  Clay balls have been found in the tombs of Egypt, they have also been found in Native American burial grounds.  They have also been discovered in the ancient Aztec pyramids.  Now you can make like the Egyptians and play, it's harder than you think!

Simple marble game
Up to four players
1. Draw a circle with chalk on the pavement.
2. Each player chooses their own coloured set of marbles (so you can tell which are yours). You will also need one “shooter” marble, which is different to the rest.
3. Place all the marbles (except the shooter) in the circle.
4. You get one turn each.  The first player uses their thumb to “flick” their shooter to try and knock out the other players’ marbles from the circle. Keep the marbles you knock out, and then it’s the next person’s turn.
5. Keep taking turns until all the marbles are gone from the circle.
6. Whoever has the most marbles, wins!  At the end of the game, return all marbles to their owners.
