Moonlight

by Grier Gardyne

It was a dark moonless night, I was shaking in my boots. I am the one, the only, great werewolf hunter. I am absolutely terrified, knowing that any moment now the moon could reveal itself and wake up every living werewolf in London. Oh no! Here it comes squeezing its way into the wilderness.
Now you could be wondering why I am in Epping Forest and why I am a werewolf hunter, which is unusual occupation for a 16 year old girl.
It all started when I applied for a cookie shop job. The best cookie shops are in London. There was a risk to my plan as London was the worst city for werewolves and werewolves love cookies. I got the job and I was going to London.

I arrive at London and what a beautiful sight caught my eyes, I immediately fell in love with my new home. My shop opened at 6am and closed at 7pm on a daily basis.

All went well until week 2. It was full moon I was closing up my shop. I saw a black shadow creep along the white wall baring its teeth. Slowly the creature edged towards my cookies. Yes it was a werewolf. Absolutely terrified I fled. I ran until I felt sick. I looked around at my whereabouts and found myself surrounded by trees. I was lost.

While I was lost in the forest, I trained myself to live and hunt while avoiding enchanted streams and animal footprints filled with water as legend says drinking from these can turn humans into werewolves. I had decided to become a werewolf hunter.

Just by a stroke of luck a newly married couple had decided to come and picnic on the outskirts of the forest. When I was by a stream catching fish, I overheard voices and went to investigate.

It began to rain and the couple ran off in such a fright that they left their picnic basket behind them. Fortunately it contained a lovely cheesecake, torch, blanket and SILVERWARE! My plan was coming together.

Later that night, I sat hunched in a tree ready to strike any passing werewolf. I hear a rustle from a nearby bush. Is it a werewolf? I get my weapons ready for an attack. My mind keeps on going, any moment now. A dark shape leaps out from the bush. It was only a bunny! Phew.
Then suddenly I heard deep breathing behind me, I swung down from the tree. I whizzed my body around holding my weapon, my silver knife. I saw a werewolf. Quicker than I it lunged out and scratched me on the cheek.  I fell forward into a puddle. The water trickled slowly into my mouth. I looked down in horror as I recognised the puddle was a werewolf footprint.
I began to feel a strange tingling through my body like no other I had experienced before. I stand and catch a whiff of...chocolate chip cookies.  Awhooooooooo!

Sara Mason – New Zealand Surfer

Ever dreamed of being a surfer? Well fourteen year old grommet Sarah Mason is living that dream. Born in New Zealand and now living in Australia, Sarah recently competed for NZ at the “Olympics of Surfing”, the ISA World Junior Surfing Champs held at Piha in Auckland. Just before Christmas Sarah experienced her first surf in the big waves of Hawaii. For a young girl, only 14 years old and not yet 5 foot tall, the experience was pretty memorable. We caught up with Sarah and found out that despite being an incredibly talented surfer, underneath, she’s just a kid like everyone else!

When did you start to surf?  When I was 6 or 7 and we were living in Taranaki.  What’s a typical day like for you?  I am home schooled so I get up, check the surf and if it’s good go out for a couple of hours. I fit in school work around the surf, which is perfect. What else do you enjoy doing when you are not surfing? I like snowboarding, skating, touch footy and tennis. I have just taken up kitesurfing, which is pretty cool.  How do the skills from surfing help with your other sports?  You have to have good balance for surfing and that helps with most of them. What’s your biggest fear surfing in Hawaii?  The sharks and getting held down or separating from my board.  What do you do to get fit?  I go swimming and running and eat healthy, thanks to mum. Who are your surfing role models?  Dane Reynolds because I love his airs. Where’s your favourite place to surf in New Zealand?  Wainui Beach, Gisborne.  Where would you most like to visit?  The Mentawais, I so want to go there. Goals for the future?  This year I will be doing the Pro Junior Circuit and want to do my best in that. Then one day I hope to qualify for the CT. What music do you like?  Anything, I like listening to whatever is on the radio. If you had a super power what would it be?  I’d be super fast; super fast at running, super fast at everything, like Dash from The Incredibles.  Shout out to your sponsors?  Thanks to Roxy. Through them I have been able to come to Hawaii and also get some great clothing. My favourite are their bikinis and singlets! Also thanks to DC.
